Manchester United need no longer fear losing Ander Herrera on a free transfer next summer after triggering their extra year option, according to reports.

The Spaniard was heavily linked with a move to Barcelona over the summer, while his relegation to the bench at the start of the season stoked Atletico Madrid’s interest.
With his original contract expiring in the summer of 2018, he would have been free to discuss a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.
But the Daily Mail report that United have actioned a clause in his deal that automatically triggers an extra year, meaning he is now tied to Old Trafford until 2019.

Despite being named as United’s Player of the Year for his performances last season, Nemanja Matic’s arrival has seen the Spaniard fall down the pecking order.

But he is nevertheless happy at the club and enjoying working under Jose Mourinho, despite the interest from teams in his homeland.

Both United and Herrera have held discussions over a new, longer term contract and are positive an agreement will be reached, but the Red Devils decided to protect their asset in the meantime.

Likewise, Juan Mata, Luke Shaw, Ashley Young and Daley Blind all have similar contract clauses which are expected to be triggered, preventing them for leaving for nothing in the summer.
