7. William Gallas- No.10
Former Arsenal and Chelsea French defender is a respected legend. He was a vocal player who never shied from criticizing teammates on the pitch.
Gunners’ fans will remember many great moments about their former Captain. However he will not be among the best No.10s in the club history. A defender wearing a very attacking minded number is a surprise to many.
6. Mario Balotelli- No. 45
Former AC Milan, Liverpool and Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli is well known all over the world. The Nice forward has a tendency to attract controversy. However, if you think you had heard enough, listen to what he said about his shirt number
‘When I first played three or four games with Inter Milan, when I was young, I had No 45 because the numbers for young players were from No 36 to No 50,’’ said Balotelli.
‘I took No 45 because I was joking that four plus five is nine – and I scored in all four games. It brings me luck and that’s why I’ve always kept No 45.’
4. Jordan Ayew- No. 3
Ghanaian striker Jordan Ayew joined Swansea United from Aston Villa in January. The transfer made news not only because his brother Andre Ayew played there, but also because of his shirt number choice.
The 25-year-old was offered numbers 3, 50 and 58 to choose. He settled on the traditional left back number 3. Now you can imagine a striker wearing that number. Fans were shocked why he did not take the fourth option of choosing any number between 64 and 99.
3. David Beckham No. 23
Former Manchester United winger David Beckham is probably the most popular footballer in the history of English football. During his days at Old Trafford the former three lions captain was known to wear shirt number 7 but that was not the case with when he moved to Spanish giants Real Madrid.
The number 7 jersey was occupied by Raul Gonzalez and so he had to chose another number. He opted for 23 for only one reason. He said the number was iconic because basket ball legend Michael Jordan also used it.
2. Jonathan De Guzman- No.1
Former Swansea midfielder created history in 2016. He was allowed to take shirt number 1 at Serie A side Chievo. It is a strange number for a midfielder.
1. Hicham Zerouali- No. 0
Former Morocco international Hicham Zerouali is also in the history books not because of his football skill or success but because of his shocking shirt number at Scottish Premiership club Aberdeen in 2000.
Zerouali decided to chose Jersey number 0 because people had nicknamed him ‘Zero’ from his second name. He however became the first and last player ever to wear the number because it was banned a year later by the Scottish FA.
