Manchester United is preparing to welcome Hull City at Old Trafford tonight for a must win Premier League clash. A win will take the Red Devils within two points of a top four place. They could actually go 5th if bitter rivals Manchester City fail to get all three points against West Ham tonight. Mourinho has been speaking to the press this afternoon and he is full of confidence.
Now, let us take a look at what is cooking at Old Trafford today;
5. Mourinho message to Martial
Jose Mourinho has asked Anthony Martial to be better than Henrikh Mkhitaryan if he wants to start ahead of him at Manchester United. The pair started last week FA Cup clash against Wigan but the Romanian produced a man of the match performance.
“Do you want me to leave Micki out after him being Man of the Match and playing so well as he did?” said Mourinho.
“I can’t! I think the players pick themselves, I’m just here to analyse what they do and to try to be fair with them. After such a good performance, Micki has to play. It’s simple.”
“Martial has to perform better than the others that are competing with him for the same positions. His position is where we have lots of options.”
4. Young survives to fight another day
Manchester United winger-cum-defender has survived the chop at least for now. The 31-year-old was told he is free to leave by head Coach Jose Mourinho but nothing really happened on deadline day.
The former England international has become a benchwarmer at Old Trafford since the departure of Louis Van Gaal but he has somehow managed to stay on despite constant rumours about his future
3. Herrera reveals the best position United can finish
Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has officially given up on any hopes of catching Chelsea at the top. The Spaniard however believes it is possible for the Red Devils to finish second in the league if they can start off with a win against Hull City tonight.
“At the moment, Chelsea is many points ahead and, to be honest, we have to think about second place right now,” Herrera told United Review.
“We are six points behind second spot and, in the Premier League, anything can happen in two weeks. Any team could be second, third or sixth.
“We must win against Hull and not think about the rest or the next game. We just need to win and try to get into the top four as soon as possible, but we should have our minds focused on the fact that we can be in second place soon.
“It is Hull at this moment and we have an obligation to win if we want to be in the top four. It is going to be tough. It always is. Every Premier League game is tough. But we are at home, we feel strong and good in front of our own fans and we want to win.
“I will say it again, no excuses, we want to be in the top four as soon as possible.”
Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has criticized record signing Paul Pogba and winger Jesse Lingard for a video going viral in social media showing the two dancing in the dressing room.
The former England Captain took issues with the duo timing of the clip because the Club is currently not in a celebratory mood at 6th place in the table.
“Listen, I’m all for having a bit of fun on social media,” Ferdinand said.
“But when you’re fifth [sixth] in the league, you’re not in the Champions League positions and you’re fighting…
“Until you’re winning, that’s when you go out and do stuff like that.
“I’ve dug out Arsenal players for doing stuff like this before and it would be wrong of me to not talk about the United players.
“I’m all for having fun, and I think part of Pogba’s appeal is that he’s a happy free spirit – which I wouldn’t want to take anything away from – but there’s a time and getting the balance right.
“If that footage comes out after you’ve won a cup final, or a league – I’d be the first one to be pushing it out.
“But if it was me, I’d be thinking ‘we’re fifth, sixth in the league, we’re fighting for a Champions League position, we haven’t got our hands on any silverware yet’ – I’d want to keep myself under the radar a little bit.”
1. Mourinho- I know my summer targets
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has moved quickly to calm fears that he might not be sure about the player he wants to bring in after failing to land Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann in January transfer window.
The Red Devils failed to bring any player but allowed three to leave. The ‘Special One’ says he knows who he wants to bring in next summer.
“We are more focused on the summer period.
“I know what I want, so there is no point in me speaking about the next transfer window when we have so many matches to play, so much to fight for, so many good players to work with.
“If you ask me ‘do I know what I want for the next transfer window?’ yes I know. Is it possible to get? I’ll try, always, to be realistic.
“I remember years ago when I was asking for a second goalkeeper, my technical director gave me a list of possible second goalkeepers and the first name was Gianluigi Buffon!
“But I’m always realistic, always try to give options that are gettable, but we’ll have time to speak about that in the summer.”
The Red Devils will face Hull City in a must win Premier League clash on Wednesday as they try to move up the table.
