England opener Mark Stoneman was dismissed in controversial circumstances on day one of the third Ashes Test at the WACA.
Having just passed fifty – his third for England in six matches – Stoneman was given out by third umpire Aleem Dar as he was adjudged to have edged Mitchell Starc to wicketkeeper Tim Paine.
The Surrey batsman initially survived as the on-field umpire waved away Australia’s passionate appeals but eventually had to go, much to the frustration of England and captain Joe Root.
While replays and Snicko suggested the ball brushed Stoneman’s glove on the way through to Paine, it was not entirely clear what hand the ball hit.
The batsman had taken his bottom hand off the bat, meaning the decision should have stayed not out if the ball made contact with it.
