Jose Aldo has defended Conor McGregor for his behaviour at Bellator in Dublin when he shoved a referee a slapped another official.
McGregor is now in danger of being hit with a lengthy ban from MMA after he caused a major scene at Bellator 187.
Aldo enjoys a bitter and fierce rivalry with McGregor and has often hit out at the Irishman’s antics.
McGregor had the honour of dethroning Aldo in November 2015 as the featherweight king, a massive shock for a fighter unbeaten for nine years.
Many have come out to condemn McGregor, but Aldo believes the lightweight champion is just an emotional guy.
‘I haven’t seen the video, but I heard about it,’ Aldo told MMA Fighting.
‘I think it’s normal. He’s an emotional guy, and when an Irishman is the fighter the Irish people embrace them a lot. I don’t condemn him.’
He added: ‘He didn’t do that for attention, he’s done that before.
‘When we did The Ultimate Fighter, an athlete from his team won and he went up there and in there, he even tore his pants.
‘He’s really emotional, and I don’t condemn him for what he’s done.’
McGregor issued an apology after the fight night, but insisted he was provoked by the refereeing of Marc Goddard.
