The 33-year-old Argentine could not save his side as they suffered an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at home to Brisbane Roar.
First half goals from Brandon Borello and Tommy Oar were enough to send Brisbane through to the next round of the championship.
The defeat was a hammer blow for Shanghai boss Gus Poyet, who had gone to such detailed lengths to prepare his team as he even fixed up a friendly against another Australian side the week before.

Tevez who is on a £615,000-a-week deal with the Chinese club was expected to shine on his debut, but he failed to make any meaningful impact in the duel.
Nigerian international Obafemi Martins tried to bring back Shanghai into the game when he was introduced in the second half, but the visitors held on for a deserved victory.
