The January transfer window approaches the final day of its closing and many teams have already got who they wanted to boost their squad for the second half of the season, others are still in the market. After Morgan Schneiderlin’s £24m move from Manchester United to Everton, we take a look at the most expensive winter transfers in Premier League history.
David Luiz – Benfica to Chelsea (£21.5m)
David Luiz first completed a deadline day move to Chelsea for a fee of €25 million from Portuguese side Benfica, signing a five-and-a-half-year contract. The Brazilian defender went on to FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League. PSG signed him from Chelsea for big money in 2014, but he made his way back to Stamford Bridge this summer.
9.Luis Suarez – Ajax to Liverpool (£22.5m)
Luis Suarez’s £22.5m move from Ajax to Liverpool in 2011 is arguably the best piece of business ever conducted in January. The Uruguayan striker wrote his name in Liverpool historical book with his hard work and natural goal scoring instinct.
Suarez played a vital role in the Liverpool side that should have lifted the Premier League title in 2014, scoring 31 golden boot winning goals. Suarez was sold to Barcelona in 2014 for £75m – the fourth biggest transfer of all-time.
8.Darren Bent – Sunderland to Aston Villa (reported £24m)
Aston Villa broke a club-record fee to sign the English striker in 2011 in a deal of £18 million, which was risen to £24 million. Bent finished the season with 9 goals in 16 Premier League appearances for Villa, becoming the club’s joint top-scorer with Young.
After that, Bent went on to become a disappointment at Villa, scoring 25 goals in 72 appearances before leaving for Derby when his four-year contract expired in 2015.
7. Morgan Schneiderlin – Man United to Everton(£24m)
After disappointing period under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United, Schneiderlin signed a four and a half year contract with Everton in January 2017, re-uniting with his former manager Ronald Koeman. The transfer fee was reported as £20m, rising to £24m.
6. Juan Cuadrado – Fiorentina to Chelsea (£26m)
Chelsea signed the Colombian winger from Fiorentina on a four-and-a-half-year deal in the 2015 window, with Mohamed Salah going the other way on loan.
Cuadrado struggled to make any impact in the next five months under Jose Mourinho. Juventus put his Chelsea nightmare to an end in August 2015, taking the player on a season-long loan.
5. Wilfried Bony – Swansea to Manchester City (£27.5m)
After scoring 35 goals in 70 appearances for Swansea, Bony joined Manchester City for £28 million in January 2015 , a deal that made him one of the most expensive African footballers of all-time.
The Ivoirian striker struggled for game time at Man City and following the arrival of Pep Guardiola in the summer of 2016 he joined Stoke City on loan for the 2016–17 season.
4. Edin Dzeko – Wolfsburg to Manchester City (£31.5m)
After a successful spell in Germany where he lifted the Bundesliga trophy with Wolfsburg, Manchester City paid big money to sign the Bosnian striker.
Dzeko helped City win the Premier League on two occasions, as well as scoring the equalising goal against QPR in the dramatic last minute triumph that sealed the title for the club.
3. Andy Carroll – Newcastle to Liverpool (£35m)
Carroll signed for Liverpool on the last day of the transfer window on 31 January 2011 for a fee of £35 million, at the time the highest amount paid for a British footballer. Carroll was bought to replace Fernando Torres, who moved from Liverpool to Chelsea on the same day for a fee of £50 million.
However, a mixture of injuries and style brought Carroll’s Liverpool career when he joined West Ham, where he’d spent the previous season on loan. This move was made permanent in June 2013 for a fee of £15 million.
2. Juan Mata – Chelsea to Manchester United (£38m)
Despite winning two player of the year awards in the previous consecutive seasons, The Spaniard fell out of favour with current boss Jose Mourinho at Chelsea and he was sold to Manchester United in January 2014.
While Mata took time to re-find the form that made him a hit at Stamford Bridge, he enjoyed an encouraging 2014/15 campaign. He now seems to be a key part of Mourinho’s plans at Old Trafford.
1. Fernando Torres – Liverpool to Chelsea (£50m)
After netting 65 league goals in three-and-a-half seasons with Liverpool, Torres left the club in January 2011 to join Chelsea for a British record transfer fee of £50 million, which made him the most expensive Spanish player in history.
Torres was one of the best strikers in the world when he was sporting the No 9 shirt for Liverpool and was named in the FIFA World XI in 2008 and 2009, Maybe, that’s why Chelsea made him their record signing.
