Liverpool have reportedly agreed to pay the release clause of Bayer Leverkusen winger Julian Brandt.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is reportedly keeping tabs on players in his homeland when looking for January transfer recruits.
Brandt has emerged as one of European football’s top prospects and several clubs hold an interest in the 20-year-old, but it appears that Liverpool are keen to steal a march on their rivals.
According to The Guardian, Klopp has given the green light for Liverpool to meet the buy-out clause of £11m for a move to take place in the summer.
Liverpool will hope to have achieved European football for the next campaign, and that could play a part as the Merseyside giants look to get a transfer over the line.
The 20-year-old moved to Leverkusen in 2014 for a reportedly minimal fee of just €350,000 and went on to make 12 appearances in his first season.
Since then he has become a regular at the BayArena and has played 23 times this season for Leverkusen, including every Champions League group game this campaign.
His impressive form has seen him earn a call up to the German national side. Brandt was selected in Joachim Löw’s initial 27-man squad this summer for Euro 2016 but was not selected in the final 23 who travelled to France.
Liverpool are short on cover in wide positions, with Klopp often having to move Adam Lallana and Georgio Wijnaldum onto the flanks.
However, it remains unclear whether Brandt would be interested in a move this month as Leverkusen – unlike Liverpool – are involved in the Champions League last 16.
Leverkusen are struggling this season and sit eighth in the Bundesliga table, six points off the Champions League positions.
The German international has scored 19 goals in 111 appearances in all competitions
